Love, For Sale.

You know what they say
If it comes easy
You let it go the same way

I hear, they have stores here
That claim ‘everything sells’
So I put my heart out there
Waiting for the best bargain

Gone are the days
Of romantic fate
I’ve debts to pay,
I’ll give and take.
Do I hear any takers?

Love is for sale.

Reverse

I look into my rear-view mirror
I see what I left behind
Reverse,
Tempted, For a moment I relive the drive

On the long journey reverse
I fill myself to the brim,
The smoke from the past
Clogs and chokes my being
Suffocated,
I Exhale,
For a moment I feel renewed and alive.

I realise,
There was nothing
I could have picked up,
On the way
There had been no love lost.
And none found either.

Fallen Star

You searched for me in daylight,
I was right there by your side
But you never saw me
The sun overwhelmed my light.

You searched for me in twilight
But the moon was yet to come
I tried to call out to you
But my light just wasn't enough.

You searched for me in the dead of night
You looked at the starry skies,
Teardrops formed in your eyes
They smudged your vision,
They blurred your sight.

I called out to you,
But you'd already turned your back,
You'd lost all the hope,
Tired of waiting, resigned.

And I came crashing down, shattered,
Just to be near you

I am a star fallen,
To make your wish come true.

Voices

Discontent, Dissatisfied,
I’m not in the moment
I stay in denial.

Their vision doesn't match
The thoughts in their head
What they see, they don’t approve.
Voices. They command me.
They’re all around,
They tell me just what I’d need
To be the perfect me.

The perfect me, as they envision.
For a while I listen, on and on.
I earnestly believe.
But they never seem to stop.
And perfection keeps eluding me.

My ears hurt now.
I’m tired listening.
Voices, they’re so shrill.
They’re so loud.
They drown my own.
I search inside.
For my own voice.
A faint whisper.
That was all I needed to hear.

Now the voices tell me not to,
But nevertheless, I do.

Treasure Hunt

Look what I found
A box full of hope
A treasure so rare
Buried deep in myself
Where was it
When I needed it the most?
If only I had searched back then
Instead of despair
I could have found my strength
I always won those treasure hunts
How did I not discover this one?
Never mind, I’ll put it back
I’ll save it in my secret stash
I have there faith and happiness
Hope I will add to the assortment
Someday all of it I’ll need
Till then I’ll just hoard
And pacify my greed.

Haunted

House of guilt
Haunted,
By the mistakes
Of my past
Walls of denial
Can’t hold off
These ghosts
Of all the wrong choices
That I made
I lock all the doors and windows to my soul
But they still seem to find a way
To enter into my head
The bed of defiance that I sleep on
Creaks with the weight of my remorse
Spirits of misjudgments
Haunt even now.

This Means W. A. R.

She had her non-manicured claws
On that pretty chiffon scarf
She looked at it
With lustful eyes
The thing that I wanted the most
And the one I’d never let her buy
I walk over to her, swiftly and with purpose
With a sly smile
I whisper meaningfully in her ear
“I don’t mean to be offensive or curt
But if you touch it, you’ll get hurt
Leave it honey and just walk away
I saw it first, it has my name”
In the glory of her smugness she basks
She raises an eyebrow. “Or what?” She asks.
Eyes narrow, nostrils flare
Balled up fists and murderous glares
My hair’s just done, and my shoes are new
My nails are freshly painted in blue
Some of them shiver and others scoff
As I say the most clichéd dialog
How many times have you heard that before?
“Hold my purse, this is war.”

Scars

Wrapped up emotions deep buried
Shoved away carefully in a dark niche
The shame still haunts
The humiliation still daunts

They were wounds of the past
They stung and burned
You bandaged them and covered them up
Wiped the tears off
And faced the world

But they left a scar
A wretched scab
An eternal reminder
Of the shameful past

They looked like they healed
But one scratch on the surface
Was all that it took
One scratch on the surface
And the wound was fresh again

Emotions came surging back
Back from their dark alcove
They brought the pain along with them
The mind replayed it all over again
The hurt. The tears.
You cringed.

Shame came first;
Hurt came next
But then came the moment
Of cold numbness
As the anaesthesia of acceptance
Slowly worked its way in

You saw yourself more clearly
As light entered the wound
Now the scars stand as a souvenir
A testimony to the struggle

The struggle to forgive;
The struggle to accept the past
The struggle to renew the hope
And the struggle to let go

The scars stand firm
A reminder that it was real
A reminder that you healed
A reminder that despite all the odds
You're still here; you survived.

Femme Fatale

Give me your heart
So I can break it in two
One I’ll keep
The other is for you

I’m not evil baby
I just want you for myself
I won’t let you escape
I won’t let you cry for help

Come with me alone
I’ll close the door behind me
I’m all you’ve got
And I’m all you need

I’ll be good to you, I promise
But don’t you break my heart
Or you’ll be the target
And I’ll be the dart

No, don’t crush my dreams,
That won’t be good for you
You see this knife here?
I’d hate to see it cut through you

I’m not evil baby
I just love you so
Make me your best friend
Or I’ll be your worst foe

Just do as I say baby
And there’ll be no love lost
Don’t you underestimate
My power to play God

I’m not evil baby
I know you have a voice
I respect your decisions
But you don’t have a choice

I just want your love
I don’t like bloodshed
But if you don’t love me back,
Be prepared to be dead

The Beautiful People

They belonged to the sky
Those free-spirited souls
They deserved to soar high
Strong, brave and bold

Yet here they are
The beautiful, belittled
Broken wings hold them down
The light in their souls
Slowly fading out

Their stories, left incomplete
They languish alone
In their altered reality
Dreams ground to dust
Like their once beautiful wings

Spirits of the sky
Who deserved to soar high
Wings, strong as steel
Hearts, pure as gold
Battered and bruised,
They fell,
Their perfection ruined

Beautiful souls, they are said to be
Trapped in their imperfect bodies
Or are they
Beautiful souls
Trapped in this imperfect world

Sleeping with the enemy

I wrote this poem for a poetry competition where it won the first place. The topic of the poem is Marital Rape and is one of the subjects that is close to my heart. Sadly, in India, Marital Rape is still not considered to be a crime because of the strain it will supposedly cause to the system of 'marriage'. In fact, girls are advised to be married off to their rapists if they are raped before their marriage, as this system is considered so sacred that it even legitimizes the very act of Rape!

This is the story of her,
She who walks amongst us,
She looks seemingly normal,
You don’t suspect anything’s wrong with her

But just give her another look,
She is more than your neighbour’s cook
She is unusually thin and frail,
Burned and bruised, her skin cold and pale
Her eyes are hollow, blank and void
Yet if you gaze a little closely, they look sad and recoiled.

Her soft sobs and weeps
Recount stories of those untold horrors and griefs
That await her at her own house,
In the form of her drunk, abusive and sadistic spouse

Every night she shudders
At the thought of going back home
Where night after night
She relives the worst nightmares of her life
It’s a terrifying thought she can’t shake
That this isn’t a dream from which she can wake
No means to run, no routes to escape

This is the story of her,
It may sound clichéd
Born in poverty, a burden on everyone’s head
What is her fault?
That she is a girl?
Or merely the fact that she was even born?

Disposed of by her parents
In a deal they called her “marriage”
Cursed to spend the rest of her life
Being abused and disparaged

Sleeping with the enemy
Night after night,
The torture and pain he inflicts on her
Gets drowned away in her cries

Nobody to help her;
It’s her duty after all,
To bear all the agony without a complaint
Because her husband is supposed to be her God

As the nation today fights tooth and nail
Protesting against the rape of all those unfortunate victims
Here she stands; this woman too
She has gone through the worst, and continues going through
She suffers no less than any other Nirbhaya, Damini or Gudiya*
Her anguish never ends,
Damned in a fate worse than death

Battered and worn,
She lights a candle too
She prays for the victim,
And for her own misfortune

Her fault was being born,
Born in a land
Where her femininity is not welcome
Where marriage is considered so sacred,
That it even legitimizes rape!

A New Dream Begins

Here I was yesterday,
But a tender caterpillar
Secure in the cocoon of my dreams
Small and insignificant
What change could I have made?

I opened my eyes today
And I see what I am now
A beautiful butterfly
Shy and Hesitant
Will I be able to fly?

These wings are fragile
Will they stand the weight of my doubt?
Painted with colours
Of hope and aspirations
Ready to take me to the world
They spread out

Slowly and carefully
I’m beginning to trust my wings
Opening my eyes to the brilliant sky
Oh I know once I learn to fly
It’ll give me a different kind of high

Slowly and carefully
I’m beginning to trust my wings
Take a step forward
As a new dream begins
